Pump it up
Fendi’s snake skin and tan pumps, Giuseppe Zanotti’s yellow suede and neutral patent leather sling-backs and Jimmy Choo’s patent leather sandals made global fashion go into a tizzy. So its time you smear some nude colour on your feet too (albeit a tad inexpensively). Tie-ups, gladiator straps, ruffles, bows, lace, cutwork, satin and even chiffon are shoe must-dos. Mango and Nine West have yummylicous shapes (your pockets will be minimum Rs 2,500 lighter). For cheaper versions (slip-ons, flip-flops or thongs), scrounge local shoe shops (quality, of course, could be an issue).
Bag-o-mania
Emilio Pucci played with leather fringes to create a nude thriller. DKNY sculpted a nudish quilted bag. While Yves Saint Laurent crafted a tan tote. Again, be prepared to spend a bomb on these (save if you must). But, if you don’t want a huge dent in your pocket, go for a scrumptious sack bag from Mango a little over Rs 3,000. A cheaper version would be Selfridges bag for about Rs 1,500 (shop online or bribe a friend living abroad into buying one for you). Multi-brand outlets also stock local brands that are good. For a girly charm, pick delectable bags with nude ruffles, frills and bows. A burnt suede satchel is equally cool. Loaded? Psst: Try uber-expensive Sergio Rossi textured box clutch!
Mad hatter
A straw hat and a buff beret are things you might overlook, but introduce them into your wardrobe to liven up your looks. Wear a beret with pants, denims or a skirt for a sophisticated sporty look. A great idea is to ask your mom or a good old aunt to knit or knot this pretty piece for you (macramé, tatting and hand knits are so-in). The advantage: It wouldn’t it cost you the earth! Funky tip: Add a little badge or an animated brooch. A wide-rimmed straw hat can add much-needed zing to beach and cow girl looks. Pick up one off a street or a flea market. Don’t spend more than Rs 500 on this.
Stole it!
Investing in a buff coloured or nude stole or scarf is an awesome idea. Burberry has lovely drapes (hallmark checked and striped) that are sheer pleasures to flaunt. Of course, you will have to shell out a huge amount (Rs 10,000 or more). Alternatively, Pashmina and gauze-like stoles available locally are truly exquisite. They can be casually wrapped over a tee, top or a sheath dress. Silk or chiffon nude-on-nude prints are tempting too. If nothing impresses you, get a length chopped from a yardage to form a scarf. It can never go wrong bunched around your neck or as an ascot knot!

- No need to match the nude tone or tint to your complexion, at least not to the tee.
- Nude footwear should slightly match your skin tone.
- About 2.5-inch nude heels look great with dark denims.
- Mix nude accessories with something dark.
- Yellow and orange look particularly good with flesh tones.
- Black or white looks stunning with a nude bag and matching heels.
- Mixing nude accessories with nude or neutral ensembles is a big no-no.
- Skin-coloured trinkets (earrings, hair bands or bracelets/cuff) look nearly as chic as other nude biggies.

Kaftan culture: Flowing and comfortable kaftans add a sophisticated boho look to your persona and they suit almost every body shape. “Choose fluid colours such as white, soft aqua blues, sand beiges, muddy browns and hues of yellow, lime green and rust with intricate designs or floral motifs. The kaftans must be layered with asymmetrical lines in free flowing chiffons, georgettes and cotton for the perfect summery look. For a sensuous get-up during the day, combine the transparent kaftan with a bead and sequinned bikini top inside,” says Moushmi S, a fashion designer from Pune Fashion Week. She further adds that the best way to wear your kaftan is to team them with your favourite pair of hot pants or micro minis and strut around with funky thong sandals.
Sundress impress: Choose from a range of flattering sundresses varying from yellows and pinks to Mediterranean blues for an evening fiesta with friends. Choose subtle floral dresses during the day that match the holiday atmosphere, but don’t make it too loud. “Complement your dress with large hats, sunglasses, open-toed shoes and innovative waistlines which complete the look of sun-soaked destinations,” adds Moushmi. Cotton and linens work well in the day and sultry satins at night. Make sure the clothes aren’t too tight, and you can hang the clichéd LBD back in the closet.


Aladdin’s treasure trove: If you’re really not comfortable with wearing dresses and are more comfortable in pants, try out Turkish or Jodhpur pants. They are available in a wide palette of colours, ranging from reds to greys and even browns! “Team them up with a funky tee or spaghetti and chunky accessories, along with matching slippers for day wear,” says Shilpi Choudhury, a designer for the Miss Bangalore beauty pageant. Take your pick from colourful baubles to tarnished faux gold jewellery to complement the clothes. It is perfect for any time of the day and it keeps you in a free flowing comfort zone.
Retreat with the boho beat:Long, flowing bohemian tube dresses are now available in a plethora of new funky designs and colours. Take your pick from minty greens and surreal blues as your palette for bohemian dresses in the morning along with floral designs. To complete the look, add a bandanna or a cute head-band. And if you want to beat the summer heat and look super glam as well, wear a wide-brimmed sun hat with large sunglasses.

At night, opt for the darker shades of the same palette and team them up with your best pair of gladiator shoes. Nothing high-heeled though, remember looking relaxed is the key to make you feel like you’re on a real vacation! “Make sure the shoes aren’t too casual though,” says Moushmi.
Bag it right: Since you are bound to carry a variety of things to the resort, it is good to have a cute straw tote bag at hand! “Use it to dump your basic make up, sunglasses and sunscreen during the day. In the evenings, stick to a spunky clutch purse to match your sultry outfit,” says Moushmi.

Bridal makeup is getting innovative by the day, creating different looks to suit different occasions. Bridal makeup expert Maushmi Dhawan suggests the Oriental, the 70's dazzling diva look, chic out of the bed look and the Indo-Western fusion look for dazzling this wedding season

Ostentatious oriental
The Oriental look adds an element of exotica and is perfect to adorn for cocktail parties. It includes lot of colours and requires you to pay special attention to hair to get the look right.
Makeup
• First take the concealer followed by a pancake and translucent powder. Match it to the skin colour for natural finish or go for one shade fairer uplifting the tone.
• Clean the brow and add a light and bright shimmering colour eye shadow.
• Apply the eyeliner with wing effect from top to bottom.
• Add kohl in the lower eye lid along with mascara on the eyelashes for better definition. Apply blush on temples and cheek bones and end the look with a lip liner for defined lips along with a lipstick of long lasting colour and gloss.
Hairdo
Divide hair in two parts E2E (ear to ear) in the front section and the back section. Create pony tail between the back section of the parting and above the ear, keeping a semi-circular effect.
• Push all the hair below ear towards one side creating one sided pony clipping it with pins and not rubber band.
• The section from forehead to E2E, create a side parting or whichever one prefers making a side swap.
• Back comb the hair that is in the ponytail and which is clipped to enhance the hairstyle.
• Add flowers and straws for the Oriental effect.

Chic out of the bed look
For this sultry appeal, keep the hair dramatic and large and makeup nude and subtle.

Makeup
• Apply the foundation, translucent powder and concealer (if required).
• Add the blush on cheeks and use light peach and pink as eye shadow.
• Use kohl as definer to the lower eye lid and light mascara for effect.
• Apply gloss on lips for sheer effect.

Hairdo
• Divide hair in two parts, forehead to E2E and E2E to occipital bone
• Defuse dry the back section of hair with a diffuser and once done back comb lightly for height and better formation of the style.
• In the front section, defuse dry towards the ears and in the centre, blow-dry straight to create evenness to the face.

The 70’s show
Popularised by Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om, this look has the softness yet the glam appeal to lighten up your special day.

Makeup
• Apply the concealer, pancake and translucent powder in same order.
• Clean the brows, apply any matte coloured eye-shadow matching the dress. Apply shimmer eyeliner double the size of the black liner.
• The black eye liner should be applied with the winged effect and mascara. This look is a no kohl look; instead use highlighter of brown colour.
• Let the blush sweep the entire cheek.
• Lastly, use dark and bright colour lipstick for prominence.

Hairdo
• Divide hair in two parts, forehead to E2E and E2E to occipital bone.
• Further divide the E2E to occipital bone section in two halves top and bottom.
• Start tonging the bottom half and make a pony tail with the top half of the hair. Add the roller hair pieces in a flower shape keeping the pony tail hair in the centre of the flower. Tong the pony tail hair also.
• Remember, the E2E and forehead section needs to be parted on the side tonging them and clipping them lightly for effect.
• Add accessories as seen in the picture to add the final dash of glamour.

A traditional twist
This look is a fusion of Arabian nights meets Indian and oozes sensuous appeal to the hilt.
Makeup
• Apply concealer, pancake and translucent powder.
• Clean the brow and add black colour eye shadow to the concave shape of the top eye lid. Smudge it lightly towards the brow area.
• Use heavy mascara followed by kohl in lower lid.
• Smudge it towards both the sides, creating a winged effect.
• Use highlighter from the arch area to the end of the brow.
• Add blush on the cheek bone and temples to create a sharp effect.
• Apply deep lip colour as the Egyptian’s ladies do for lip enhancement.
Hairdo
• Blow-dry your hair. Section your hair from forehead to E2E and E2E to occipital bone.
• Back comb from E2E to occipital bone for a bouffant style effect.
• Make centre parting in the forehead section by lightly back combing it.
• Add accessories like mang tikka for the Indian touch.

Celebrity Street Style of the Week: Ashley Greene, Anne Hathaway, and Cheryl Cole

Look 1: Ashley Greene’s Plaid, Liquid Leather, & Zippers Combo

Ashley Greene was out in West Hollywood with her Jonas Brother boyfriend Joe for dinner this week, debuting a look which at first glance is casual, but also features some sexy and unexpected twists. A loose-fitting plaid button-down shirt gives the look a relaxed vibe, but Ashley amps up the look with some liquid leather leggings and shiny leather over-the-knee boots with zippers running up the sides. She keeps the rest simple, with a small black clutch to hold her essentials.

I’m going to start off with the boots, because I am in love with them! These Jessica Simpson over-the-knee boots have the same zipper detailing as Ashley’s, but they are essentially flat (they feature a tiny raised heel), so they work perfectly for daytime, making them incredibly versatile. The plaid shirt from Forever 21 is a bit longer in the back, making it the perfect length to wear with leggings, as it will keep your backside covered. The liquid leather leggings from Victoria’s Secret add a sexy sheen to the look, and the black clutch has faint zipper detailing on the flap, so it works well with the boots.

Look 2: Anne Hathaway’s High-Waisted Flare Jeans

Anne Hathaway, who has been announced as a presenter at the 2011 Oscars (along with James Franco) was at LAX with her boyfriend this week, wearing a pair of curve-hugging, flared jeans with a high waistline. I love when celebs dare to rock denim that isn’t skinny jeans (although I must admit, 95% of the denim I own falls in the skinny jean category!) — this pair of jeans highlights her curves and looks classic with a white button-down shirt, a black scarf, and oversized sunglasses with a cat eye shape.

If you too want to attain Anne’s understated yet sexy look, the first step is finding a great pair of jeans. I chose a pair from Gap’s Long and Lean line, which are mid-rise, fitted at the thigh and hip, and flared through the bottom, making them super flattering on most body types. If you wear them with a simple heeled bootie, as Anne did, your legs will look mile-long! Tuck in a classic white button-down and add a pendant necklace and simple scarf. Finally, oversized cat-eye sunglasses are a fun twist on a classic shape, completing the look.

3 Winter Formal Looks Inspired by the Runway

With school winter formals happening this month and next, every girl is searching for the perfect look that bothflatters and stands out in a crowd. After writing the Runway Looks for Less column last semester, it seemed only fitting to look to the runways for formal inspiration as well.

I admit, some designer looks are a little too ridiculous to wear to a semi-formal; but even if the look itself is over-the-top, you can still take inspiration from the colors and accessories! Below, I picked three looks from Lanvin, Anna Sui and Chanel and translated them into formal and semi-formal outfits to fit a college girl’s wardrobe (and her budget).

Lanvin’s Jewel Tones

Florals and pastels are always pretty, but for the winter season, there’s nothing better than deep jewel tones. Lanvin’s Spring RTW collection incorporated pieces in hot pink, yellow and emerald, all anchored by dark browns and gunmetal accents. The looks that came down the runway were powerful and eye-catching.

Now, you’d look a little silly in a pencil skirt at a formal dance, but the colors and silhouettes of this look are great inspiration! So look for a dress in a deep pink and instead of accessorizing with black shoes, pick up a pair in brown instead. As for your jewelry, don’t be afraid of big gems and jeweled bib necklaces – they will bring your look from average to amazing.

Anna Sui’s Lace

Anna Sui’s collections are always full of whimsy, mixed patterns and fabrics and, in the case of her Spring 2011 RTW collection, babydoll dresses. I love this look because it’s young and fun while still looking put together. Lace seemed to pop up on many runways this year and is definitely a fun trend to play with!

With a couple of little changes (most people don’t wear combat boots to formals), this lacy look becomes an outfit that Blair Waldorf would definitely approve of. Pearls, ribbons and delicate fabrics are the keys to translating Anna Sui’s look into the perfect formal ensemble. Plus, black and white are always sophisticated and classy.
